How LMHD Can Help You Fight Gum Disease

The professional dental community believes there is a strong connection between oral health and overall health, and when it comes to gum disease the connection appears to hold true. Recent scientific studies link gum disease to an increased likelihood for many serious health conditions, including heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and strokes. This connection is alarming, especially because an estimated 80% of adults in the United States are living with some stage of gum disease. But what is gum disease, and how can we treat or even prevent it?

Gum disease, or periodontitis, is an infection of the tissues that surround and support the teeth. Plaque, the sticky film of bacteria that forms constantly on teeth, gathers in the pockets in the gums that surround our teeth, causing gums to become red and swollen, and may bleed easily. This early stage is called gingivitis; it is often relatively painless, and commonly goes unnoticed. If promptly diagnosed and treated, gingivitis at this early stage is still reversible, but if left untreated, advanced gum disease, called periodontitis, will occur.

Periodontitis occurs when the gums begin to pull away from the teeth, forming deepened spaces or pockets where more plaque collects, and bacteria multiplies. Over time, periodontitis can lead to the loss of tissue and bone that support the teeth. Advanced gum disease, left untreated, will continue to become more severe over time, even leading to teeth that are loose and may move around the mouth. Aggressive periodontitis is the most highly destructive form of periodontal disease, and includes rapid loss of tissue and bone and may occur in some areas of the mouth, or in the entire mouth.

Periodontitis can have serious implications for overall health. Recent scientific research shows that oral pathogens may be linked to cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis, low birth weight babies, diabetes, and other serious medical conditions. At La Mesa Hills Dentistry, we believe it is imperative that we do all we can to reasonably reduce or eliminate these bacteria. During a routine office appointment, our hygienists provide patients with thorough cleanings designed to eliminate bacteria and completely clean the affected area. LMHD offers the use of hygienic lasers which are highly effective, non-invasive, painless, and the process normally only takes about 5-10 minutes. The laser, when focused into the pockets that surround the teeth, effectively destroys the bacteria and decontaminates the area.
