La Mesa Hills Dentistry, in La Mesa, California is a family practice, and we are proud to serve clients of all ages. We value our older clients, and we understand that as you age, your specific needs change. LMHD is here to be your partner in maintaining optimal oral health as you age, and we promise to listen to your needs and work with you to develop the dental solutions that work best for your individual needs. If you are missing teeth, dental implants are a great way to replace missing teeth. Dental implants are just as effective and long lasting in older age, and can have a significant impact on an older person’s life. Dental implants can resolve joint and bite problems and restore chewing, speech, and digestion. Dental implants can also provide a secure foundation for dental bridges or dentures. Most importantly, dental implants can restore your confident smile, giving you improved physical health and more confidence. If you are ready to learn more about how dental implants can help you restore your smile, LMHD is here to answer your questions!

How Dental Implants Can Help You:

  • Replace one or more missing teeth without affecting adjacent teeth.
  • Support a bridge or denture, making it more secure and comfortable.
  • Restore chewing, speech, and digestion.
  • Resolve joint pain or bite problems caused by shifting teeth.
  • Restore or enhance facial tissues.
  • Restore a confident smile.

At La Mesa Hills Dentistry, we provide our patients with the highest quality dental implant technology. Dental implants are the preferred modern method for permanently replacing teeth; they are strong and durable and can last many, many years. A dental implant consists of a titanium post that acts like a root, with a porcelain crown placed on top.

Dental implants can be used in solutions for replacing single or multiple missing teeth. Dental implants can also be used in other dental restorations such as an implant supported bridge or implant supported dentures, which are perfect for those unhappy with their traditional removable denture. The dental implant can provide a fixed foundation for bridges or dentures, providing excellent support and stability for these dental appliances.

What does getting dental implants involve?

At La Mesa Hills Dentistry, we make the dental implant process simple. The implant process may require a number of visits over several months, but the LMHD team is here to ensure the process runs smoothly. At LMHD, we offer our clients a complimentary initial consultation. The purpose of the consultation is to determine the bone, gum tissue, and spacing available for an implant. Dr. Fjeldsted uses the most current technology, including our 3D x-ray machine, to get a full 360-degree view of your mouth. Then, Dr. Fjeldsted creates a precise and appropriate treatment plan, specifically tailored to your individual needs.

During your next appointment, the implant(s) will be placed. While the area is numb, the implant will be placed in your jaw, exactly where your missing teeth should be. Most people experience less discomfort and pain than expected, but just as in any other dental surgery, you may experience swelling, bruising, minor bleeding, or pain. Most patients usually manage any pain with over-the-counter medications.

After the implant surgery, the implants are then left alone to heal and integrate into the jawbone. Most dental implants for seniors are successful, however in some cases, the bone doesn’t fuse to the dental implant. In these cases, the dental implant is removed, and the process can be tried once more in a few months time.

After several weeks of healing, the artificial teeth are made and fitted to the post portion of the anchor. This step may take a few visits to complete, as several fittings may be required. After a healing period, the artificial teeth are securely attached to the implant, providing excellent stability and comfort to the patient.

Patients will receive care instructions with their treatment, and will have regular follow-up visits with the dentist to ensure everything is healing well. The frequency you will need to have check-ups for your dental implants depends on the type of implant you receive and how many artificial teeth are implanted. The entire healing and follow-up process usually takes about three to nine months.

Dental implants are durable and will last a long time, even in your older age. You can help preserve the life of your dental implants by practicing the following tips:

  • ‌Practice a good dental oral health routine by brushing twice a day and flossing every day
  • Visit your dentist regularly for professional cleanings
  • Eat a healthy diet
  • ‌Avoid chewing hard candy or ice
  • Avoid tobacco
